Carlisle today is a modern industrial city and the main cultural, commercial and industrial centre of north Cumbria.

It is home to the main campuses of the University of Cumbria which gives the city a youthful vibe in contrast to its volatile history.

Three reminders of the city’s medieval past dominate the city – the castle, cathedral and guild hall. Both the castle and guild hall now house museums, while Carlisle Cathedral, founded in 1122 is a mix of the ancient and modern following restoration by the Victorians, and the addition in the late 20thcentury of sculptures by Josefina de Vasconcellos.

Carlisle continues to link its past and present, nowhere more fittingly than the Millennium Subway, which runs between the castle and the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
