About the City

Cumbria’s capital and sole city, Carlisle, the centre of the English county’s history occupying a strategic location that has been fought over since Hadrian’s Wall was erected more than 2000 years ago.

Known as the “Border City”, Carlisle is just 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the Scottish border.

Consequently, it was the centre of land disputes between the Romans and Scottish tribes and later between the English and the Scots.

The city’s massive castle, complete with crenellated battlements and turrets, is a reminder of the tumultuous past, yet it has survived perhaps more battles than anywhere else in the British Isles pretty much unscathed.

The city also possesses Cumbria’s only cathedral, built from the same red sandstone as the castle and many other buildings in Carlisle.

In the 19th centuries, Carlisle experienced rapid growth due to the industrial revolution.

Heavy industry is now all but gone and today Carlisle is known as a shopping destination and vibrant nightlife.

It is also good base to explore wider Cumbria from as it is close to both the Eden Valley and the Northern Lakes.
